Interesting history. I know I have circumvented the “permitting practice” whenever I could. The narrator states several times the reason for the sudden onslaught of the permitting process, my take is control, pure and simple, control and envy of what you have and may have and a way to tax and fee the ever-loving crap out of you. The first vestiges of a HOA.
Yeap, I’ve watched quite a few of this fellas videos. They all have that, “gloom and doom; THEY are screwing with us” tone.
Not that I agree with a permit process, but I always heard it was due to making sure buildings were safe and sound.
Not that there has ever been someone that built things in a crappy manner…….
But sometimes I think folks are looking for a boogie man and this guy is one of them.
Agree. It’s a health and safety issue to prevent hickshit construction from maiming and killing people.
Code enforcement is the purpose of the Building Department. OTOH, the purpose of the Planning Department is to fuck with everybody and extort money.
The first building code dates to 1751 BC – The Code of Hammurabi. IIRC, it was pretty simple: If you build a house that falls down and kills a man, you are stripped of your identity and required to take his, supporting his family for the rest of your miserable life.
Nope, MONEY, goobermints gotta get there pound of flesh. Permits aren’t free.
Had a drunken scion of a farming family buy a neighboring property.
One day he went out to burn off some underbrush that he had allowed to build up…one a day with high wind…after a long dry spell.
Flaming debris started fires in lots of places downwind. After the firefighters managed to bring everything under control they went to his place, and found Mr. Drunk trying to restart the fire on his place. A short time later the county passed a requirement for a burn permit.
One idiot can ruin things for a lot of people, while making things easier for ‘All The Right Thinking People” to make a power-grab.
Dad built a new hog barn in the summer of ’70 and no permit was required. In the fall of ’91 I built a new shop and while I had to have a building permit it was easily obtained. Recently my step son wanted to put up a building on his acreage for his business and went through all kinds of bureaucratic hell to get it done. I’ve seen others done by jumping over all the hurdles and others done by just building and asking for forgiveness after. But hog or chicken buildings and cattle feedlots are the hardest to obtain a permit for as well as to be zoned for. Too many people want to brag about living in the country but don’t want to have the normal country around their little acreages. Oh, and you can always tell who recently moved to an acreage in the country by the gates across their lanes.
Is it a coincidence that it was not too long after 1913: the creation of the Federal Reserve and the IRS (as we know it today)?
It is all about stealing our freedom with our consent. We should not be taxed on our own property. Especially not by some government flunky and their perceived values.
