Visited some friends one winter in upstate NY, around 1974? That stove was the sole source of heat for the farmhouse, which still had an operating outhouse (no indoor plumbing). The well for the pump was in the dirt floor basement below the kitchen sink which had a cast iron hand pump.
Let me tell ya, when it is 20 below you make damned sure that stove NEVER went out, loaded with hardwood logs at all times, then you learn to do your business in seconds, including the 20 yard dash through the snow to said outhouse, running both ways. Amazing what we put up with in our 20’s 😉
