My Cup Runneth Over

I somehow managed to run across a couple of really good deals when it comes to belt sanders recently.

This first one I bought off of VEVOR, I’ve had pretty good luck when dealing with them.

It wasn’t cheap cheap but it was almost $700 cheaper than the full size one they and everyone else offers.

It’s a 30″ X 1″ mutli function model and I am going to love using this thing after I get it mounted on a stand.

I love that it flips sideways and that you can put a wheel out on the end.

Like I said, I have to put it on a stand and I’m going to have to add a vertical plate to mount the control box on but I am plenty tickled with it.

I also ran across a good deal yesterday. I had to go to South East Portland and snag a free 4K Coleman generator and a spare mower deck off a John Deere riding mower my brother gave me. His wife, my Sister In Law, was helping family out at an Estate sale where some older gentleman who was into woodworking had passed away.

I literally could have had a complete Run Away at that joint.

Holy Moly there was some cool stuff there.

I did manage to semi control myself but when I saw this old Disc/Belt Sander it was all over.

It’s an 8 inch Disc and a 42″ X 1 belt sander.

I am currently waiting for an Amazon driver to drop off some new sanding discs and belts as I type, they are readily available.

I did some quick research on it and they were made back in the 80’s and 90’s in Taiwan, not Commie China.

They are made out of metal.

Metal guards, a SOLID cast iron table for the disc and a 1/2 Horse motor instead of the newer 1/3rd hp motors.

The On/Off buttons alone should tell you that it’s not a piece of Chinesium garbage.

$55 out the door.

It also needs a stand, I swung by Horror Freight and picked one up but I need to find an 18″ X 10″ piece of plate for the top of it to bolt it down to. That should take all of ten minutes at work.

I can even have it custom cut out of some scrap if I have to.

Gotta love that perk.

I also have aan New Old Stock Central Machinery belt/ Disc sander on it’s way from EBay.

I paid too much for it with the added shipping but it’s what I wanted. I have already had 2 and given them away. I had The Wifely Unit get me the newest one from Harbor Freight a year ago from Last Christmas and I was disappointed with it the minute I tried using it.

They literally cut corners on it trying to save money and the pressed out sheet metal table in front of the disc is only supported on one side.

Any time you have to push down or have to put anything even mildly heavy on it, the damn table sags on the one side.

It’s also got a bunch of plastic parts on it so screw that. I am going to give it to my Son In Law who is doing lots of renovations to their house which includes a bunch of wood work. It will be fine for his needs.

Sure, I could have screwed around and made a support for the table but screw that. How about you just make it right in the first place instead?

You will also notice the bed for the belt isn’t level and they didn’t give you any way to adjust that.

Cheap crap.

Bye Bye.

So anyways, The Lord has been good to me and now I have even more crap that I have to try and find a home for which means something else will have to go. Shouldn’t be too hard to make that happen. Getting rid of Mid to Low level machines to replace them with higher quality ones does not give me any heartburn.

I’m sure I will find a home for them.

As Tom Peterson always said,

“FREE IS A VERY GOOD PRICE”.

You had to live in the Pacific Northwest back in the 70’s and 80’s to get that reference.

  1. Damn, I wish I had a garage. I’d spend too much money filling it up, for sure. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished for a good combo sander. And a table saw – used to have one.

No need for me to watch YouTube. I saw Tom Peterson all the time on TV back then. “Wake Up! Wake Up!” He ran ads on Saturday Night Wrestling, if you remember that. Dutch Savage, Bull Ramos… good entertainment.

    • Lol, you are definitely a native. I used to watch Portland Wrestling every Saturday night with my Grandpa when I lived in Coos Bay. I also watched Portland Roller Deby right after it too. I used to love those Take No Shit lady roller skaters.

  2. Some men see beauty in the stars or the sea.
I see beauty in wood and the tools to shape it.
Beautiful. May your power stay on and your wood be straight.
    That’s what she said.

  3. when I left Carver, I gave all my woodworking machinery to my son, who over the objections of his dearly beloved, is making good use of it
