  1. To quote Foghorn Leghorn “I say that woman is as boring as backing into a bit and brace”

  2. Got one years ago at an rummage sale just in case. This and an handsaw and draw knife with some skill can produce an most cozy shelter like the one depicted in previous post.

  3. Yeah. Have a fairly nice one I keep as a display piece along with a few other antique hand tools. Really wouldn’t want to use it now; what can I say, I’m lazy.

  4. I used to have one, lost it somewhere in some move long ago.
I still have one that looks like a manual egg beater.
    I don’t use it, but I could.

    • I lost the brace, but STILL have the bits – don’t ask me why.

Yes, I used it as a kid.

    • Me too!

I have a couple of sizes of brace and a couple of sets of bits and files for sharpening.

Along with a full traditional set of cabinet makers tools circa 1900. I work mostly by hand, but I use my power tools to do the work that apprentices would have done circa 1900, like breaking down lumber and initial surface prep.

    • I have a “Speedwrench” to do that. Used it a LOT when working in the pits when I was raching. Yes, I still have it. 3/8″ drive.

  5. When I hired on as a cabinetmaker in 1984, we used a brace & bit to bore the hole in the cabinet floors for plumbing lines.

  6. Have two sets, well serviced, as well as a couple complete sets of bits. They will be indispensable when there is no power and the batteries in the cordless drill are dead.

Even though we have power and generators and charged batteries for the cordless drills I’m enough of a bastard I made my kids use them when drilling holes in posts for stringing trellis wires in the raspberries etc. just so they know how to use them.

  7. I have a set which belonged to my great-grandfather. Those old steel bits cut holes through hard, dry oak like the oak was balsa.

  8. ‘Anyone remember the Stanley “Yankee” drills and screwdrivers? I still have a Yankee drill in my toolbox! The thing is around 50 years old and still works fine!

    • Oh yeah, I have an old Yankee screwdriver and some bits (which were unique to it only). It doesn’t see frequent use, but every once in a while it gets trotted out.

  9. I’ll add a Star Drill for drilling concrete and such.
I remember looking over at the hammer drill, cord and electric outlet wondering why I had to hammer on that “drill”.
Hard lessons forged hard asses!!!!! America needs more of this!

  10. I still have a couple of “Turnarounders” as the Three Stooges used to call them.

  11. Oh ya, I still have one. A the guys above talking about “Yankees” made me think
about the shop I first worked in cabinetry. They used them anytime a screw had to be driven. And totally on installs. Those old men were fast.

  12. Still have that one and the standard hand drill for metal and cabinetry. If we lose all power this old fart can still fix and build. Push screwdrivers too. Not fun but works.
Have hand saws, chisels and all the gauges and marking tools as well Oh, not a Luddite, have solar chargers for the battery tools but lithium is not eternal, steel is..

  13. All those tools disappeared in my youth, would kill to have them because we may need them soon

  14. I inherited my Dad’s brace and several bits when he passed 11 years ago. I haven’t had an opportunity to use them yet.
