Brutus took a beating today. My 2000 Chevy one ton ploughed into a 2018 Rav 4.

UPDATE: The insurance company is going to fix my truck!

Pushed the bumper in and my grill guard, the hood is buckled, afraid to open it, may not latch again. Pushed the fender back into the door so it won’t open more than three inches. The lady crossed in front of me from a center turn lane and I was doing the speed limit of 35 mph. A Valvoline oil change place workers saw the crash and they have outside cameras and had video of the impact. Her car is the picture below, her two doors took the brunt of the crash, she was alright, an elderly lady. My truck took the most damage. I drove my truck home and it has a slight pull to the right, I am hoping it doesn’t have a twisted frame… I am hoping the insurance company will fix it and not total it.

  1. If they total it buy it back. I have a 2000 white 3/4 ton parts truck with all the parts you would need to fix it. Parts are free to you. just have to get them from Texas to you. if you show up here at my house i could swap out parts in about 4 hours. busted knuckles knows who i am. 64 ford owner who he sent manuals to.

    • You da man, Matt – here’s hoping your parts can make it to Vancouver!

It’s over 1000 miles, doesn’t sound like it can make it in its present condition. Phil would have to see what got skewed.

    • Iffn’ I drove down there I would have to tack on about two months on to my trip to visit everyone down in that area, I am sure I would have some broken hearts and burnt feelings if I didn’t. If I took Phil, it would stretch to six months if his readers knew he and me were down there and didn’t drop in…
I really appreciate the offer and if I can’t source them here I will take you up on the offer!

  2. 0% chance on them not totalling it out. According to their numbers, it’s worth less than repairing it, so just go buy another. They have discovered how much money is in the auto recycling biz, so they total out everything they possibly can.

  3. Had a suburban totaled by an employee and it was really totaled. Airborne wreck had a few parts I hoped to use on other suburban. Insurance company wanted more than blue book good valuation. Couldn’t figure out what they were up to

  4. I feel your pain. I was upgrading our 52k miles SAAB 9-3 with a view to running it until it dropped when an idiot geriatric drove out of a side road into the side of it. She had to cross one side of a dual carriageway and the central reservation with clear view for half a mile to get to us . . .

  5. If it’s more than 10 years old, they’ll total it. No question. I had some insurance asshole show up at the house to inspect my truck while I was at work. It just had a dent in the bed from the idiot neighbor who backed into it. No frame damage, truck was 100% drivable. He listed it as totaled, then told my wife that if I wanted to sell it he’d 100% buy it from me at the insurance pay-off price. Fuck him, I argued for two months, finally got paid $600, and continued driving it for several more years. Then sold it for $4000, still with the dent. But they wanted to total it for a $600 repair.

  6. Sorry to hear about your collision. I was lucky my accident happened way back in 2009. Kid hit me on drivers side of pickup which froze the driver’s door shut. Ever see a moderately fat man climb from passenger side to drivers side with console in between bucket seats ? For two weeks, had to do that – royally sucked. But insurance took the hit. After my $700 deduction, they ponied up the rest for a total of $2300. I doubt I’ll be that lucky in the future.

    Again – my condolences.

  7. Dang, that is sad to contemplate.

Seeing as I have been working on an older F250 for a couple of months and know a bit about frames from a number of manufacturers, would suspect a tie rod was bent a bit, the bumper support extension is likely twisted and not the frame. From what I can see, that is all repairable and junkyard parts are your good friend. In the event it is the forward of A arm frame, how free of rust is it and if sound, any good body shop can straighten it to acceptable tolerance.

  8. Good to read the only things hurt are your pride and the truck. As always get a second trusted opinion when dealing with insurance companies. And good luck getting the ol’ beast up and running again.

  9. DON’T Accept it being ‘Totaled’. Get a couple of Estimates to Repair it, then DEMAND that amount. If the other Driver is fully ‘at Fault’, Lawyer Up and tell them you Neck, Back, and Knees Hurt. That may get them to want to ‘Settle’ Fast for what you want.

  10. Well, it doesn’t look as bad as I had imagined.
You just might get away with having her insurance fix the thing. Of course, after you beat them senseless with your legendary negotiating skills.

    • No it doesn’t now that I got a good look at it and took it down to my mechanic shop and he looked into it, I need to get a couple of body shop estimates. I did go into Emergency early(5:30AM) this morning, my neck and upper back out into my scapula were killing me, typical after an adrenaline dump hours later. Doc sez’ I don’t have any cervical fractures(CT Scan), but severe soft tissue damage, swelling and bruising at the base of the neck. If I have any worsening limb numbness and weakness and tingling, if I lose bladder or bowel functions or headaches, with nausea or ralphing I might have spinal involvement and seek medical intervention…

  11. After repairs fab up new bumper hangers, box in forward of frame, fab up a cattle killer bumper.
Mine totaled out 4 cars in the last accident

  12. Hate to hear about your Chevy. I’m just hoping that you’re okay. I haven’t had to deal with auto insurance in so long I hope someone in the comments can help you decide what to do. Good luck, my friend.

  13. Looks like an old one so it will be totaled. Course that will affect the payout as well. If it is her insurance you might get a better deal, just howl to adjuster some. Who knows you might end up with a newer truck out of the deal.

    • I don’t want a newer truck, I am the trucks only owner, 25 years and Brutus would be sad if totaled out and parted out or repaired under a salvage title and a new owner that won’t take as good of care as I did with him.

  14. An illegal alien pulled out in front of my 1998 Silverado & I center-punched her SUV. Wrecked the front clip; didn’t even set off the airbags, didn’t bust the radiator! Insurance company totalled it. They gave me $7k. I’ll get it fixed.
