The Nightriders actually provided some security for Confederate widows and orphans when the corrupt, incompetent Union military province commanders in the war-stricken South wouldn’t keep bands of roving ex-slaves (now out of work in more prosperous areas) and some ex-military sought easy pickings where there may be no man left to defend a small-holding and family.
