  1. yeah. had a 79 van camper- the wife’s idea. she loved the damn thing.
baby shit green with a plaid interior (?) and the pop up cloth was orange too.
heat ? never felt any to speak of. the only good thing was the engine locked up and I got to replace it with a 2.2 L engine from a 914. replaced the fuel injection
nightmare with a Webber carb and put on a good set of headers.
she wanted it to go “camping” with. we went 2 times in 5-6 years.
got divorced and she wanted it- take and be gone !
    don’t miss it one bit.

  2. What an awesome collection of VW busses! The stretches, the customs, the off roaders, all great. Maybe it’s that time of the month or I’m becoming manic, or the moon, what ever it is, this bus edition really lifted my mood this morning.
Thank you you for your fine service to lifting the over all vibrational level of the universe!

    • Randy, I have done VW in the past, it isn’t a regular series, only when I find enough good pictures and when my muse inspires me and my pain meds saying yes, you can do this while under the influence… I have owned bugs and busses in the past and I sorely miss selling them. I really wish I had a bug now.

      • You reminded me that I have a VW hammock for one of those buses. Hubby picked it up somewhere in Tx when we lived their. So, it’s in a storage area now and only time unrolled was when he bought it. It was intact and is rolled up inside it’s original container. Any idea of what I could do with this item. Would love to find it a home.

      • the only good/fun VW I ever had was a 1979 Scirocco
light, fast and great on curves. easy on gas too.
bought it for 600 buck in 1989 after the divorce
5 speed box. and it had a working heater too.
that is kind of important when you in Kansas and it gets cold.
that I do regret selling when I bought my Honda accord.

      • The last time I had a real urge to get bug I thought back to having to adjust the valves every 3,000 miles… getting down on that cold ground to do it.. I’m too old for that now.

        • There is that! I modify my wish, I want a car lift with the bug so I can do all the repairs and adjustments at chest level…

          • I have a BendPak scissor lift that will lift any car/truck up to 24″. Well worth the $2K I spent for it!
Yes, CederQ, you can borrow it once you move here. Hint hint.

      • I guess I’m fairly new here, hadn’t seen them before. Still great job, thanks. I had a bug long ago and do miss it. But I missed the heat and defroster when I had it.

  3. When I was in high school a buddy had a 10 year old VW bus that had shag carpet walls and floor. It always smelled of weed.

  4. Re #1: crack pipe my ass. That thing is brilliant! All’s it needs is one thing, a candy-apple red gloss paint job. And it would be perfection if the Bug’s rear end was the front of the “new” vehicle.

Fun collection, thanks. (And where’s #9 and 11?)

    • I am pleading I was under the influence of pain meds (left ankle puncture) whilst assembling this VW post… that is my excuse and I am sticking to it!

  5. #8- How many Deadheads does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one, but after it burns out you have to follow it around for 20 years first.

  6. Nice compilation, CederQ, and thanky for the linky.
I never owned a Microbus, but I had a 1971 VW Trashbeetle that was a lot of fun. Sky blue spotty rust finish, with a textured racing stripe on the passenger side where Pecker Pete blew chunks on our way back from the beer joints.

    • Thank you Bunk, I did pilfer most of them from you! You had a nice collection. I am like you, I like unusual and different. I mean how many times can you look at a ’57 Chevy tricked out, they all trick out the same. But an unusual VW bug or bus, or a AMC Hornet tricked and massaged? That has my interest!

  7. I had a 76” pop top camper while in high school in the 80’s. Growing up in Northern California we did a lot of exploring in Tahoe national forest.
That thing was a billygoat on “roads” we traveled!

  8. #26??? – I still have my stained and abused copy of John Muir’s “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot”.

    It saved me many times.

    • I had an original edition copy, one of the best repair books I’ve ever seen, and the illustrations are amazing. I made the mistake of lending it, never saw it again.

      • How to keep your Volkswagen Rabbit alive got me through an engine rebuild after a valve stem broke and the valve dropped into the cylinder. I still thumb through it and the grease stains kick the memories.
