I love old VW’s. In the USAF, ’69-73, I had ’64 pan under a ’61 body(bug), a ’59 Ghia, a ’67 quarterback and a’68 Fast back. My last VW was a’76 Rabbit, fast, cornered like a slot car and got 32 mpg.
Very cool
My last one was a 66 beetle, license plate: RU66ED
Love seeing VW’s but that good looking pregnant gal in number 2 was bonus. Probably about my age, I would take her.
I had a rabbit in the late 70s. Great little car, as long as you kept it off of muddy dirt roads. That ate the CV boots on the front wheel drive like nobody’s business.
the last vw I had was a 1979 Scirocco 5 speed gearbox. a fun and fast car.
got it after the divorce for 600 bucks from a friend who was selling cars after he retired out of the army. it was a trade in on a new toyota mr2 ( a very fun car to test drive) anyway, I got the thing at cost. great little car, sipped gas. drove it clear across the states to get home. kept for like 3 years before trading it in on a new honda accord. got more on the trade than I paid for it !
should have kept it as it was a fun weekend car for trips and the like. very roomy too. of course, you wouldn’t want to get hit by anything while driving it.
I had an uncle that had a 60’s Kaman Ghia. He rebuilt the engine and drove it another 4 or 5 years until he turned it over to his daughter when she was in high school. She drove it for 3 years until she joined the USAF where she passed it to her 3 years younger brother so he could drive it in high school. By that time they were changing the oil filter and adding a quart of oil every time they filled up the gas tank. It got parked for a number of years.
My cousin’s husband took interest when their daughter was about 14. It was a rust free car that needed a suspension, brake system, rebuilt/new engine, interior, and transaxle. It became a father daughter project that took a year and a half to tear it apart and put it back together. It got a performance suspension, 5-speed overdrive transaxle mated up to a 140 HP boxer 4, high end brakes to stop it, new carpet/dash/seats/headliner/stereo system and retro A/C installed with a fresh paint job. That was back in the 90’s. It had a freshening restore about 2010 where it only goes to the car shows for the past decade.
Friend of my Dad fell in love with VWs in Germany while in the Army, & spent the rest of his life as a VW mechanic. Had some really nice cars. His best one was an old KG that he slipped a Porsche engine into. True sleeper.
