I never had to register to the Selective Service. I was in that post gap Vietnam era that had stopped requiring young men to register. A couple years later they started it back up and by that time I was already enlisted and serving.

The proposed new law ushers in automatic registration on turning 18.
Currently the law requires the young man to actively do something to register. No longer.
Even though there is a potential criminal penalty for failure to register it is rarely enforced. The most common penalties are the inability to access financial aid for college, government jobs or other government benefits.
