I haven’t yet needed to do any bypasses but, I’m a tinkerer and my 2004 Jeep Rubicon is the test bed. I’m in the Peoples Republic of California so CARB is a problem. I cannot get aftermarket vendors to ship here because the parts are not approved, read “the tithes haven’t been paid to our overlords”. I am fortunate though to have relatives in Nevada and it’s only 3 hours away. A nice visit and I’m heading home smuggling my automotive contraband..
Swore that my next truck was going to be a mid 60s-mid 70s 4wd Dodge, Chevy, Ford, or Jeep with a straight 6, 4 speed manual and air conditioning because I live in a steamy Southern state. Truck blew, needed a new one. ASAP unfortunately
New one is very pleasant. Tons of power, lots of bells and whistles, coming off from a 3 year lease.
Fuel economy is decent on the highway.
OTOH, if I get 15 out of this one I’ll be in my 80s and probably sitting on the front steps of the nursing home wondering if I’m gonna get pudding for dessert.
The ECM can be swapped out with a Raspberry Pi based one, the Speeduino. Guys are rolling their own. Tunable with a laptop, even supports a glass gauge cluster. Sky’s the limit on this stuff. https://youtu.be/izaVds2Rrys?si=S5nZ8T-9HbBFS7LE
I guess I was early to the dance when I decided 1999 was the last year model I wanted to fool with. Gotta start sourcing the parts for the next 300 six cylinder…
Ever heard of Megasquirt?
Right on! Fuck CARB & EPA! If they want to make any noise about pollution I got some choice words for them…
This is all great in theorey, but what does a person do when their vehicle will not pass the government mandated emission rules (coming soon to a state near you if not already there) for their year, make and model vehicle? Will it usher in a ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’ society?
There are 14 states that no longer require annual inspections.
What’s the point of having all of those fancy electronic monitoring systems, if the state is going to check up on your ride telling you what it needs in the way of maintenance?
What does a person do when a good percentage of vehicles have limo tint in windshield and front windows where the law says no, and a good percentage also run with 2+ years out-of-date registration that you know don’t have insurance and probably are illegals?
Get a burner-ride and don’t put plates on it or drive defensively?
Fuck those mutherfuckers, but it’s gonna be expensive though
