Say good bye to the Reno Air Races.

I lived on the backside of Stead Airport, outside and West of Reno and the air races were a blast. I would have co-workers and friends come over and we would set up a barbeque pit and grill everything and the beer and wine would flow. From my place you could see about 3/4 of the races. We had two radios, one tuned to the tower frequency and the other to the announcer frequency. It was great fun sitting with your buds and watching them big planes zoom by about a 100 feet behind my back acre and the noise was incredible! I am sure the liberal karens and kens from california had a hand in closing this icon of racing. When I lived there, there was a moratorium on building houses out in Lemon Valley due to a low water table and some areas were BLM land and some tribal lands. To this day I watch the air races on yube tube streaming. One more fun thing to do taken away from us, because it attracted rednecks and trad citizens.

  1. I envy your memories. Always wanted to see them, but never made it. Like an Indy car race, there is a sound that cannot be heard on TV. It comes up from the ground under your feet.

  2. ” The RTAA (Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority) decided not to renew the contract with the RARA (Reno Air Racing Association) due to concerns about rapid area development, public safety, and the impact on the airport and its surrounding areas.”

“Concerns”. Can they be more specific? What a pant load.

    • 1: Public Safety…Nobody is interested in that… if some plane crashes on somebody’s head or house the Pilot and his insurance is responsible, yes?

2: Impact? They made money hand over fist from the visitors and crews, now? Not anymore…

3: Rapid area development…now that is interesting! What was the surrounding ground and the ground of the airport worth with the races, and what would it be without the races or even without any air traffic?

  3. I flew up once with my buddy in his Comanche 250 on the Saturday or Sunday before racing started. We had complete access since we flew in, amazing all P51’s changing to race wings and all the other pit area stuff. I stood behind the slightly modified P51 with counter rotating props, wow LOUD! Lots of cool planes and people too. Great memory, sad it is ending.
