From a quick search: “The Maltese Cross originated in the 11th century and became closely associated with the Knights Hospitaller, a Catholic military order founded around 1099 in Jerusalem. Initially established to care for sick and poor pilgrims in the Holy Land, the order evolved into a military force during the Crusades, taking on the responsibility of protecting Christian territories and pilgrims”
