I finally have switched over to my newer used lap top, with WIN 10, the old lap top (WIN 7) finally gave up it’s ghost and crapped out. I wasn’t able to export all my libraries of jpegs and import them into this laptop. I am missing my Old Train, VWs and Coffee libraries and will be reconstructing them and that will take a little time. I had this Thursday Old Train set up and scheduled, so that will post. Another thing is navigating this friggen WIN 10 environment even using a shell program that emulates WIN 7’s it still is an alien operating system to me! Hell, I would be using WIN XP iffn’ if I could. They can’t leave anything alone that works and is stable.
I was quite fond of the later version of XP myself. When Microsoft stopped all support for XP is when I moved to Linux. Screw Bill Gates. He doesn’t need my money.
Same here, but end-of-support for Windows 7 for me.
I’ve still got a desktop and a laptop with Win7 and Office 2013 that I use occasionally.
I’ve given Bill Gates my last nickel.
Yank the hard drive out of the broken machine and hook it up to an adapter that will connect it to your other machine through USB. You’ll then be able to access your files. They cost from about $10 to $30 something depending on your hard drive.
Here’s the line up:

I second that idea. Before buying an adapter you could alternatively buy a drive caddy and then you can use the old hard drive as an external storage drive – just like a thumb drive.
Your stuff was in the C:\users\CederQ folder
Check the hard drive. The data/power connection should black and 2 L’s in shape – that’s SATA. If its lots of pins it’s ancient as that’s IDE – bin it when you’re done
I’ve been in IT support since Win98 days and my place is like a museum of old (still working) crap.
You too? Mie goes much, MUCH farther back, though.
Easier for Win7 folks to learn and use Linux than to use Win10 Spyware. Ditch microsoft and gates.
Plus, ample free Linux software out there that puts $0 in bill’s pocket.
Linux runs great and fast on old computers; some versions are made for old machines. I am 100% microsoft free now; love it.
Thats funny because both win 7 machines at my place packed in in the last 2 days.
That’s why they invented beer, Cederq. It’s not just for breakfast anymore.
ahhhhhh, XP….those were the days
Were?
Still.
My livelihood depends on the daily use of AutoCAD 2004, the last year I purchased it, and I have it installed on 4 refurbished Dell Windows XP computers. Bought the machines on amazon for about $125 each and cloned my original XP hard drive to each one. 3 of them are boxed up on the shelf waiting for the future and the 4th one is sitting here on my desk doing my livelihood. My Win10 machine is just for online stuff and it’s the worst OS I have ever seen. It was designed by retarded children for retarded children.
That is what I am becoming aware of this W 10, sucks like anything I have ever had to deal with.
Guess what Winders 11 makes Winders 10 look good.
I ran my old “hundred pound Dell” as my son called it, with XP SP3 until it sprung a smoke leak in June of 2021 and nursed my company server, a 2006 HP/ProLiant ML350 running the bullet proof Novell Netware 6.5 until I retired a month after that.
In full agreement with Rand re: Linux vs Win10 or 11, I love it and yes, Fuck Bill.
What ghostsniper said. If I were local, I’d come by and do it for you. I can be a PITA to pull a drive on a laptop, depending on the laptop, but if it’s trashed anyway, no harm in pulling screws out and getting inside it. Probably, the HD is easy go get to.
I maybe said this before, but getting an external USB hard drive would be a good idea. Lots of companies make them – Seagate, Western Digital, etc. Regular backups, man, that’s the ticket.
Been using Linux since 2000. You can download a copy, put it on a thumb drive and run it on your old computer ( without interfering with your existing system) until you realize what it can do and for free.
Oops. I recommend Linux Mint https://linuxmint.com/
If you’d like to try Linux, and you like the look and feel of Win7, there’s an Ubuntu-based distribution called Chalet OS that might be up your alley.
Pretty light hardware requirements, and actually easy to install.
Here’s a look at it:

W2K foreveer !!!!
Wakanda forever?
I never looked back, after purchasing an LG Sidekick, a million years ago. Never powered up the IBM T60, even once, since.
My current LG Velvet? Has 8x cores, and a 50 meg camera! (With a rarely used Galaxy Tablet, as back-up).
WTF is Windows?

I’ll have y’all know I started with Unix – AT&T System III – back in ’82.
Linux is late to the game… with a million distributions to choose from!
Still and all, give me a Linux system (ANY distro) any day over WinBlows.
Bill Gates is a hoser and a poser.
I thought I was old school starting on dual 5 ½ floppies to run graph plotting software. You had the big toys.
You win old timer (grin)
We keep getting University students for ‘work experience’. The species if f**ked when we retire LOL
Word of Advice Phil: For your memes and jpegs I would invest in an External Portable Hard Drive. It will free up your memory big time. I got a 2 TB one from Amazon for $60.
Storage has nothing to do with memory.
I have 4 of these Seagates HD’s, been using them for about 4 years now, no problems, highly recommend.

Here is another vote for Linux Mint I switched when 10 came on a replacement used computer I got. Runs great is faster than windows on the same hardware, doesn’t report me back to headquarters and 10 and 11 do and cannot be switched off. Lots of free software too.
Fuck little billy gates, I haven’t given him a dime in years for his POS’s
