I have a box of Matchbox vehicles in my attic. Well played with, not collector quality. I remember spending silver half dollars to get them…
I still have number 37.
Mine was only OK. I had the orange station wagon with big back tires, and a very old thin-wheeled dump tuck. We didn’t have any track so we used old gutters and drainage pipes; now that actually was fun.
At one point, as a young kid, had every one they made, 5 for a buck, then 4/1.00, then 3/1.00. In the actual cardboard boxes
Man up the street sold trains, slot cars, and matchbox cars out of his garage. Lots of allowance and birthday money spent there.
They were played with, hard, then handed down to cousins, friends, and neighbors for yet more use and abuse. Lots or entertainment was had.
I once filled the back of a box truck like 37 with broken off matchheads, and touched it off, expecting Wile E. Coyote results.
It went maybe half an inch.
All of my Matchbox cars came from when I was in England, ’59-62. Still have some of them.
Have the original Lesney Royal Coach with honor guard, never taken out of the box. Last I looked (25 years ago) they were going for 300-400 quatloos. I wonder what it’s worth now…
