  1. I’d give you a rash of shit for forgetting, if I could remember what I had for supper last night.

  2. On the “test your airbag”, another .gov intervention to protect people from themselves when they’re following too close or speeding, i.e. not following the law, ending up decapitating themselves.

    • My dad had a ’69 Ranchero for years. Boy, did he love that thing. Traveled all over the West in it, and many times had mechanical malfunctions. One time he had to overhaul the motor, which was no problem because he was a licensed Chief Engineer in both diesel and steam. He was lucky enough to get towed to a guy with a little service station out in the boonies who helped him get the job done and barely charged him. I think the man enjoyed Dad’s company. He was like that.

Every time we’d talk on the phone about his latest trip he’d tell me about his latest breakdown and invariably end the story with “But it’s a really great pickup”. Made me smile every time.

  3. Thanks, fellas, for IDing the Ford ute. That blue ‘73 Dodge sure doesn’t look 50 years old, it’s front mudguards formed seperate and lower than the rest of the front end illustrates the failings of most US 4wd pickups produced since the early Sixties, without the dropped corners evident on the Dodge, when the vehicle starts up an incline the driver hasn’t a clue what lays within metres of the front of the car. You end up looking at sky and nothing but, you could be approaching a drop off or hole, yet without a passenger to stick their upper body out the window tor a quick squizz, the driver hasn’t a bloody clue. You cannot safety attempt a 45+ degree slope in low-low, without getting out to walk it first if you can’t drive it standing at the open door and using the (non-existent on modern Yank cars) hand throttle on the dashboard.
That single issue is one main reason why Landcruiser or Patrol utes are bought by serious bush drivers over Yank vehicles, let alone quality and reliability issues with modern American off-road vehicles. I’m sorry if you think I’m insulting your country’s cars, just stating facts. Note I’m talking of standard fitout, not your own specs changed as needed by users.
Countdown to a retort by Cederq or Leigh…
