Second question: Anybody recognize the location where picture 23 was taken? The one with a steam engine climbing a grade and crossing what appears to be a single- or double-slip switch? Obviously a major junction somewhere.

Most likely Japanese design and may have been built by Hitachi.
Also many North American looking engines were most likely left over from Railway Operating Battalions during the Korean War.
