My daughter’s house was the worst, since it was literally five minutes from a home depot. Take a break, get the right parts, get some coffee FFS.
That said, they did something similar to that in my house. What they did was add a box next to another one, so it was a few millimeters too far apart for a double gang plate.
I had to do that, once, so I just took two plates and cut them both and epoxied them so they were one plate. Some 1200 grit sandpaper, some paint, nobody is the wiser.
