My 61 Ford SW Unibody 1/2 ton truck was like that.

It had a 72 351 Windsor mated to an 88 C6 transmission and I don’t even know what year rear end because I swapped it out 3 times.

  1. Same when I tried to get a starter for a friend’s DIRT Modified. It wasn’t enough that I wanted a starter for a 350 SBC with a 153 tooth flywheel. So when I told him it was a ’94 TEO Pro Car with a 358 small block and a BERT Transmission – he almost drooled. Ended up telling the guy: 1970 LT-1 Camaro with a 350 and a 10 1/2 inch clutch. He was able to find that.
    If H&T Auto Parts was still open at that time of night, Johnny could have walked out back and pulled one without even having to look it up. Real parts men are as rare as hens teeth anymore.

    My Pro Stock was worse. 72 Chevelle frame and lower control arms. 74 Nova upper control arms. 74 Nova spindle on the LF and a 72 Impala spindle on the RF. The rear end was a 2800lb Ford 9 inch out of a pickup. It was heavy, but built like a tank. Hardly ever fell out due to a mechanical failure. Great car to learn on.

  2. I had a 72 F-100 with a 79 F-250 2wd suspension, 72 T-bird 351W that had been built to 350 HP, and T-56 five speed out of s 90ish Mustang GT. Bucket seats out of a Buick and a rocking under dash 8-track back in 1981.

  3. Ran in to this phenomenon when I started working on my ’85 Beaver Motor Coach.
    427 *truck* engine, Allison 353 4-speed automatic, rear axle still unknown, chassis by Gillig, tons of subsystems to inclued the water, air, hydraulic leveling system, air throttle, THREE different A/C systems, Onan-powered 5KW generator, Dish antenna for satellite receiver, custom monitoring system for tankage, instrumentation out the wazoo with appropriate idiot lights. Between the DC and AC electrical systems, quite the wiring nightmare.
    I’m up to the challenge. Had to replace the (Custom!) idler link for the steering, took forever and 200+ bucks to fix.. Found more modern systems to replace the tank instrumentation, the satellite system, the sound system, the TVs, and replaced ALL the DC lamps with LEDs – including the running gear lamps whose bezels I had to totally replace due to age/cracking/crazing/missing. Replaced all the fluorescent lamps by gutting the electronics and using LED strips.

    It’s not just a job, it’s an *adventure*.

  4. Went to Advance auto parts for a quart of synthetic gear oil for an antenna gearbox at work. Find what I’m looking for, and went to the counter.

    You guessed it, what year, make, and model?, what engine? I explain what I’m using it for, and that I know what I need, just want to pay for it, and be on my way.

    Think he was still trying to find the info in his system when I left.
