I think I might be unique in the state of Wisconsin in that I’ve been driving here for fifty years and have never hit a deer (although I’ve had a few close calls). I don’t know how I’ve been so lucky. Most people I know have hit at least one.
I’ve hit five and killed four of them just with the car I’m driving now.
I hit the first one three days after I bought it. Further down the road I had a cop pull me over for having a headlight out. When I told him I just hit a deer, he asked if I had reported it. When I asked if NYFS was going to reimburse me for the damage to my car, he said “no”. So why should I bother to report it, so my insurance can go up? I don’t think so.

Here in Michigan I used to drive 40 miles each way to work. I hit 4 or 5 deer over the years while going to or coming from work. And back then the state used to give you credit for something like $100 or $150 toward your insurance deductible if you hit a deer.
It has been a long time, so I don’t know for sure, and since I am old now, I might be remembering a dream instead of remembering something that really happened. Sadly that happens to me more and more now. It sucks to get old. I know what some of the cars that I used to drive would have felt like, since some of them only ran if held together with gum and coat hangers. I have not had to resort to the coat hangers to hold myself together yet, but I know that it is just a matter of time.
I don’t know how many deer I’ve hit driving at dawn or dusk in Kansas and never killed a one. Sure buggered up whichever vehicle I was driving. Split a song bird in half with the radio antenna once. Left a funky curve in the antenna, too.
