  1. It appears that the scouts are armed with Trapdoor Springfields and the black trooper has what may be a Winchester Model 1873 lever-action rifle.

    • Troop has a trapdoor carbine, you can just barely see the saddle ring and bar on the side of the weapon. Keep looking! There’s a lot going on in that photo.

      • Yes. As noted, trooper in 10th Cav, so has been issued a carbine. Scouts are armed with rifles. And those Mills Prairie Cartridge Belts loaded with 45-70 ammo are flippin’ heavy.

  2. 1 That’s fun shit right thar
2 They’re not dead scouts from custers 7th Cav.

    • Best line in the film: “Or two too many.”

I’ve always been disappointed Leone didn’t give Woody Strode and Jack Elam more screen time in that movie.

  3. #31 I sure like that drop holster
#38 There’s a beautiful photo. The forward 5″ inch on stbd appears to be missing barrels.

Question: Is the Springfield 1911 any good?
I’m seeing a number of them for sale at a price lower than other makes.

    • #38.
I think the guns on that 5″ turret are pointing straight at the camera, and the white dots are the barrel plugs. USS Tennessee was used primarily for shore bombardment. She fired more rounds with her main batteries (12 14-inch guns) than any other US BB. One of her gunnery officers was Jeff Cooper, USMC. Yeah, THAT Jeff Cooper.

To quote the late Ltc., “Blasting Jap pillboxes at point blank range with 5-inch 38’s beats shooting tin cans with a 22 all hollow”.

  4. Little remembered fact: Teddy and the Rough Riders where getting their asses handed to them by the Spanish using Maxim machine guns during the battle of San Juan Hill. 10th Cavalry soldiers, led by a Major Grimes, drug a couple of Gattling Guns up the hill and won the battle, also saving the future president. The U.S. Army didn’t have Maxims, even though they were invented by an American.
