  1. Is ativan like atarax? I remember they used a lot of it when I was an orderly in nursing homes when I was a teenager. Probably why I didn’t go into nursing as a profession.

    • Atarax is an antihistamine, used for itching caused by allergies and anxiety. It also used as a short term sedative for anxiety and as a precursor to surgery to relax and relieve tension.
Ativan is also used to treat anxiety, insomnia and seizures. So yes it is used quite often in a nursing home setting. We used them in a psych setting, but more commonly ativan.

    • That is for you to contemplate Igor… You have to ask if my behavior and mood has warranted any of these psychotropics?

      • According to the American Psychiatrics Association, almost ALL of us here can use a good dose of one or more of these drugs.

        Buncha crazy pill-pushers.

        • White man does not speak with forked tongue… You wouldn’t be surprised what the APA wanted to push, even bring back EST (Electro Shock Treatment) use with more diagnoses. Studies indicated that it was somewhat effective for Major Depression and only one doc at the hospital I worked still used that procedure, but sparely.

  2. DOPESICK- by Beth Macy. You people might want to read it. I am a viet nam vet and 73 YO. and have never taken any of those.

    • You ever had surgery, chances are you were given a dose of atarax IV or ativan IV when you were in preop or just into surgery and were asked to count down from 100…

      • Actually, nowadays it’s Fentanyl! Believe it or not.
They used that on me during my Aortic Valve Replacement surgery…

        • It is a very potent pain reliever, pharmaceutical fentanyl. I knew it as Actiq or Duragesic. It is up to a hundred times more potent then morphine.
