AM-1 Tulchanka

It’s a Russian ATV armed with a PKM and an AGS-30 automatic grenade launcher.

I could see us arming our 4 wheelers and ATVs like this…

  1. RP Advanced Mobile Systems has some nice rigs on their company site. Marketing primarily to Tier 1 units

    • The range of the AGL is a paltry several hundred meters; the MG can reach out to a mile.
The problem is that it can’t be used while moving very well.
A pair of the RPDs, 1 per side, firing forward, and with a handlebar firing solenoid, would solve that little difficulty handily.
They should also be dismountable for foot forays.
One ATV in four should have a Dishka (if you can’t clap onto a Ma Deuce) instead, and give the GIB a proper MANPADS, and one in five should simply be ammo crate mules, including a couple of disposable AT systems.

18 guys, ten ATVs, and you can take on company combined-forces tank-infantry elements at near parity, and greater mobility.

You could even call them the Rat Patrol.

  2. In 2010 at OP Dicey, Khost. Afghanistan, they had a Polaris Ranger 4×4 with a MK-19 grenade launcher mounted in front of the passenger position.

  3. I remember something about the army playing war games with armed dune buggies versus tanks. Buggies cost 20K and you could field 200 or so with weapons for the price of one tank. Tanks lost.
