Deathray…

3/21/22 6:09PM PST, I got an email from Deathray a few minutes ago, seems he was clearing snow off of his barn/shop about 10′ to 12′ off the ground and fell. He fractured his Right ankle with multiple fractures. He was airlifted to Fairbanks and he said he got some good drugs and is heading into surgery. He said he would update me tomorrow and I will pass that on. Send Prayers and thoughts!

Update: 8:14PM PST. I just got this from Deathray, “Just saw the surgeon. It is not a good situation. It is broken in many places and all kinds of pieces. Waiting for a cat scan. Spend night. He may do a surgery tomorrow just pinning stuff together to immobilize it. Can’t operate for at least a week or two. “

Update: 3/22 2:03PM PST Deathray emailed me and said he was going into surgery about 4:00 PM his time to stabilize his fractures. Said he was okay, bad night with pain. He had a great nurse last night but said the nurse today is an old burnout that should retire.

Update: 3/22 8:01 PM PST. Deathray got out of surgery and said this,

“So I’m out of surgery for the time being. This is some type of carbon fiber box that is held in place by pins that are running through the bones. They finally Gave me good drugs and for the first time since this happened I’m not chewing nails. Dr and I had a talk about that and I told him I wasn’t happy. Neither was he when he saw the swelling under the first cast. I’m thinking that I may actually get some sleep tonight.”

Update 3/23 11:00AM PST, Called Deathray at the hospital and he is doing a little better, still sore and mostly pain-free, had a heart to heart with the surgeon and nursing care seems to have improved 100%. He is just waiting for the care plan to mature and waiting for a prognosis. He still needs yours prayers and well wishes.

Update 3/23 8:36PM PST They took off the box and we can now see the hardware. Death is saying he is hurting, may be an infection or a reaction to bolts sticking in him…

  1. The silly fucker should have used snow cleats on the shoes, that far up working around snow and ice.

Seriously, good thoughts to him, broken bones are no fun.

  2. “Tis but a scratch.”

Seriously though, my heartfelt prayers are with him for a full and speedy recovery.

  3. Saying a few prayers for our friend.
Waiting for an update on his condition and to see if he is going to need some help.

    Death is good people.

  4. Yikes – went through something like that when a heavy metal object landed on my foot and turned bone into a jigsaw puzzle. Luckily I got a good surgeon who was able to put it all back together.
Then you have a period of physical therapy.
It was amazing how much use was restored to my foot/ankle after all that.
Hope Deathwish has a speedy recovery, and that he lucks out with his surgeons and physical therapists as well.

  5. Miss Sandy, if only you could administer the healing power of your Ka-Bar to Deathray’s foot, or at least threaten to, in person. Then I reckon he’d mend-up quick, ‘cos I think he’s scared of you. He’ll need some sort of help, busting an ankle at his age is no joke, not that his pals at Phil’s place would make light of his misfortune, much.

      • Fuck that, Cederq. If he ain’t dying, why hold back? This is Deathray, remember. And if he is dying, shit, I’ll have to husry up, ‘cos I owe that arsehole heaps. One thing I gotta do is notify miss Stacy Abrams, so she can make a bedside visit to her Tank Guy, while he can’t get away.

  6. Geez, that sucks. I hope he recovers from this with no long term effects.

My wife broke her ankle in a motorcycle accident two years ago in late February. Judging from her mood at the time, not a recommended activity. Weird how it worked out though – COVID had just shut down schools, and administration were asking teachers to teach from home via computer. So she didn’t have to take any time off of work any way. Me – crap, I was in charge of everything, including stepping and fetching.

    • Oh man, just the offer is very appreciated. I have cedrq reaching out to you to put us in touch. Even if I don’t end up needing anything just having another contact up here would be great. Thank you.

      • Brother, I work for one of the medevac companies up here; dunno who brought ya in but I sure hope you were well cared for. Drop me an email, I’ll pop in and check up on ya. trykflyr@icloud.com

  7. #1, multiple fractures suck. (especially when they compound)
#2, Hospitals have the best drugs, hands down
#3, Get well soon and welcome to “the Hardware Club”

Me: 14″ plate and 10 screws courtesy of motorcycle vs BMW and that’s right, you guessed it. No turn signal….

  8. Man down!! Call in the Choppah!

Seriously, that sucks big time. Guess “Deathwish” will have to suck it up…

Get Well Real Fast, Deathray. Or we send Tank over to you, pour encourager les autres

  9. Good thing Deathray is a tough guy. Sounds like he is anyway from what I can tell.
    Healing prayer and thoughts forthcoming.

  10. Damn, that really sucks. Especially the “many places and all kinds of pieces” bit. Hang tough Deathray, sending prayers for a speedy and simple as possible recovery.

  11. that doesn’t look good. but then again, any break in the ankle area sucks.
hard joint to heal too. it is one of the main reason why paratroopers wear high boots. f you have to break a leg, do it higher up and above the ankle.
but anytime you see pins and a frame work around a joint, you know it was a bad break. glad he got some good pain meds at last.
having needed pain meds in my past, I know how much of a difference they can make in your life. for one thing, you no longer pray and hope for a fucking heart attack to happen and end it. yes it can get that bad.

  12. Death I wish you great repair and speedy healing. I to am an old stubborn bastard. Lucky to many times trying not to be so stubborn these days. My brother a week ago decided to take a head first dive off a round bale trailer. Should have broke his neck, lucky just concussion and sore as hell. Good thing God not done with you, me or him and all of us yet.

Phil thanks for the report and updates. If I was there I would be at the hospital as support.

  13. Igor, that is a great idea for his recovery. We may need to provide a stand-in for the Tank. Is there anyone in Phil’s readership who knows somebody in Fairbanks capable of providing a Stacey Abrams stripper-gram for Deathray? I reckon that Cederq could photoshop any pix necessary, if not.

    • Yeah Johno, send me a pic of you and that would be enough, seeing you would motivate him beyond belief, he would tap unknown personal reserves and be healed with in a week.

    • They’re ALL Abrams tank sized here. Been looking for a normal sized gal for the 27 years I’ve been here!

  14. Looks like the orthogod opted for an external fixation device. Used when the bone is fractured into multiple pieces. That means there are metal rods going through the skin into the bone with an external scaffold keeping things from moving.. It works well to keep the extremity from shifting allowing the bones to knit. However the main risk is infection since the skin remains compromised. Means it was a nasty fracture requiring next level care.

  15. Glad you are on the mend, Deathray.
Hope you heal quick and fully.

  16. That’s some other worldly looking contraption. Those screws through the skin can’t be any fun. I hope it makes the healing go like it’s supposed to. I marvel at some of the techniques that have been invented to repair a broken human body.

    Best wishes and prayers.

  17. pins and metal in you or sticking thru you is never any fun. I know ,back in the 1973, hit a pole and used my right hand to block the windshield. not a wise move on my part. anyway, ended up with 3 different casts and pins thru the arm and wrist
not a lot of fun there. might be a good idea to eat more fresh garlic as that will help a lot with infections. back in the 1990’s some tests where done trying to kill off staf infections, it was weird that garlic worked better than the high priced meds.
but the study was dropped as they wouldn’t make any money off of garlic.
funny how that works now, isn’t it ?
growing garlic is a big plus when shit goes south. always use fresh if you can.
pills and other stuff does not work as well.
as a rule, hospitals are breeding grounds for all sorts of infections.
get out as soon as you can.
