There is nothing like being there to be the companion to the passing. I was holding a hand telling the vet it is all right. I am here. I was the only one there. That is something not mentioned in nursing training. It is a real part of the job. I am almost in tears remembering.
Heartfelt SALUTE to all the nurses, med techs, paramedics, firemen, and all the other public servants who are often the ones who have to experience the last moments or relay the terrible news to those who are left behind.
GOD BLESS you guys and girls for what you do that most people couldn’t endure.
(Unfortunately some of us have had the experience … don’t want to deal with it on a regular basis like you folks do.)
If you’ve ever been to a shitty mechanic, you’ve probably been to a shitty doctor as well. More people die in the OR than outside in the fresh air.
My mom was a nurse anesthetist for over 50 years, the sad stories she told. She’s in heaven now.
