At the time judge Smith presided ovr court in the town of poughkeepsie. He had sent some British troops down to town of patterson to quash a settlers revolt. They arrested two of the leaders and brought them to poughkeepsie for trial. The locals got a little miffed and tard and feathers him and sent him packing back to the capital of Massachusetts. Dutchess County was part of Massachusetts at the time. Patterson in now putnam ny was part of Connecticut. About a year and a half later the continental army was camped in patterson. The enemy aliens they were trying to get rid of were British soldiers. Sorry that was a bit long.
