When I was a kid, I saw them most days. “Horny Toads could be found without difficulty. That was the ’60’s, Spring Valley, San Diego Co. Today it’s overrun with habitat destruction and Mexicans. So are all the other suburbs of San Diego.
That and politics, is why I’m in Tennessee.
We’ve got roadrunners in our area. I’ve had them all over my yard. As a Midwest guy, I thought that was pretty cool. So much so, I thought about trying to bait them in and see if they’d post up in my yard.
Digging into these guys, you find out they are viscous little carnivores who thrive on the snakes, lizards, toads etc. If you want roadrunners to hang around, you need a thriving population of crawling/slithering food for them.
I’ll stick to feeding the hummingbirds.
Interesting observation. We have TONS of the crawling / slithering critters all around SW Florida. Perhaps it’s the plethora of coyotes that keep the roadrunners away.
Roadrunners also kill a lot of young birds too. Destructive and unrelenting. They can fly and run down slower birds (nearly all of them) and can evade snake bite attempts. Little raptor dinosaurs they are.
