  1. Great story, thanks for sharing. My family have all owned VW’s going back to our first a 1964 Bug my father purchased new.

  2. My first car was a ’60 Bug. 36 HP, top end of about 62 MPH. It didn’t even have a gas gauge. But it was perfect for my father’s purposes because it couldn’t go very fast and it couldn’t haul too many hoodlum kids. Or so he thought.

We did manage to cram eight in it one night, but I have to admit that was one of the very few things the old man was ever wrong about.

  3. My first Bug was in Germany, a 1956 with a 1968 911 engine and tranny. Me and a buddie toured all over West Germany and France and Spain and a short trip over the ferry at Calais to England. I had to keep a 30 pound bag of sand in the front to keep it down on acceleration that engine was hot rodded! Sadly, I could not ship it back to the states as it would not meet fed standards and too expensive to meet them. My second bug was a 1968, colored baby blue. I still wished I had my 1968, I got 33 miles to the gallon and it was very easy to maintain and tune. I did move the battery to the front trunk and used a group 27 battery with 1 gauge cable back to the engine, never had a dead battery or dim lights.

    • you mean ‘912’ engine, right?
the 6cyl and trans from 911 just don’t fit in a type 1, maybe in a type 4

      • It could have been, it was a 4 cyl engine from a Porsche, it had Porsche embossed in the crankcase. It was from 1978 memories fade…

        • 10-4, yup 912 motor…basically a badass VW, ported, balanced, cammed, & with a 5 speed = gooood shit! I did see a VW bus at a show once, full 911 power & trans, barely fit in the bitch but wow!

  4. Now I was expecting that when the punch-buggie came back from Mexico it was seized at the border with 68 kilos of cocaine welded into hidden compartments. But that’s just me.

    • Heh. Good one.

Why sell it? It. Still. Runs.

‘Use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without.”

Maybe the reason her family was well-off was that she and her family didn’t piss it away buying the newest/latest/greatest?

My cars ALL have over 200K+ miles and I don’t plan on replacing any of them, just sticking new/used parts in ’em when necessary. NO car payments for me!
