    • Oh I know, lived in LA, lower Alabama for 12 years and 2 while in the Army. I hated walking on an red ant hill.

    • We’ve had them forever. I remember reading about them in high school, so 50 years ago. They live in low oxygen environments, so pretty much only in the muck in the bottom of freshwater lakes. There’s a county park about a mile away from me, and they have a fountain in the big lake to keep the water aerated. Haven’t seen a report of one here since the early ’80s when they put the fountain in.

  1. On the topic of Fire Ants, there’s a new ant in Florida that eats the fire ants. They’re called Big Head ants and if you see pictures, you’ll know why. The colonies wage war on each other and Big Heads usually win. As a result, I hardly ever see the fire ants around the yard anymore.
