Should have codified it into the Constitution/Bill of Rights.
Franklin said a republic if you can keep it, we couldn’t.
ps Nobody could, the average life is 250 years. The Romans were the best exception. It’s said once they figure out they can vote themselves largesse from the treasury the decline begins.
