  1. Last week at work my starter went “click” and the chain started.

The chain ended with me on my back on a tarp on the snow with a 4-way lug wrench trying to smack the started because I didn’t have a proper pounder as a couple youngsters looked on.

The chain really ended with me driving off, but that just sounds mundane.

  2. Or a pair of pliers.
Phil, I should see Farmer Bob on Wednesday and get some photos of the hit and miss engines I mentioned a long while back. It’s been a long winter for both of us.

  3. Easy on a Ford, rather difficult on a Chebbie. Don’t remember if Chrysler has an external solenoid, my jeep doesn’t.

  4. most people have no idea what you just asked them. learning how to jump it on the starter motor is the trick. you need a length of thick wire and a steady hand.
you used to be able to rebuild them too. drill out the rivits and used bolts tp put it back to together with. the disc got worn on 2 spots, either clean it up or rotate it
to clean spots. I don’t think they make them out of thick copper anymore though.
last time I had to mess with one was back in the early 1970’s
Chrysler and Dodge had a ballast resistor on the firewall that always went out.
they started on 12 volts and ran on 6 volts – weird setup, but it worked for them.
so, if they started but would not run, it was the ballast that was gone.

  5. Had an 65 VW bus with 6 volt system. I would have to crawl back under the engine to get to the solenoid. It would start in gear, so you have to pay attention to what you were doing. I parked on a hill whenever possible.

  6. It’s even more fun when you accidentally start one with the oil dipstick you just pulled out. 1970 Datsun 240Z inline 6 had the oil dipstick hole right next to the starter solenoid. Yes, words of exclamation and amazement including the universal adjective were uttered.

  7. The starter on my 1973 Super Beetle was wonky. I used to have to do the same thing to wake it up. Once, after fishing on the SchuylkillI River, I forgot to take it out of gear. I was laying on the ground under the car just in front of the rear wheel and damn near ran myself over.
