I got a hand me down one. With a smattering of barely usable cars.
I played the hell outta that thing.

I had the cheap plastic mat of a road and a service station. Dad didn’t make a lot of money. We cut roads in the dirt with the Matchbox bulldozer. My white privilege card got denied early in life. Had to work for stuff.
Still have one that the grands play with.
Hot Wheels was later than my minatute car years. I had Maychbox cars, and there was a service station for those that I jad.
I had One Hotwheel for every Ten Matchbox.
And the rare Tomi and Corgi too.
Wish I still had them.
Yes matchbox was the way to go! So much better than hot wheels! I had 4 boxes of them and my mother threw them out when I went to college!
Oh! I would have thrown my mother out for a serious indiscretion of that magnitude!
We had both Matchbox and Hot Wheels. My brother had a membership in Hot Wheels Club – was sent a chrome King Kobra mustang, that was cool ! This was back in mid 1970’s.
Then slot cars came along and the older were put away. Through the years, they were given to younger cousins and their children.
That, tons of track and the motorized thing with the spinning foam rubber wheels that would continually shoot the cars around the track
Wanted it but never got it. If you go search in YouTube you’ll find a whole community of people that are restoring Hot Wheels cars. I still have a couple of mine which are from the initial series but they are in rough shape. I have a British Racing Green Ford GT that was a special edition that came with a tube of Gleam toothpaste. I’ll bet it’s the last one left.
