Best way to quit smoking is never start.
Told that to my kids over an over. They were never even tempted.
Poor Phil, best of luck on your attempt(s)…
Pretty sure thats a doobie and that guy is stoned.
I had a sixty years long habit starting with unfiltered Camels.
I used nicotine lozenges and nicotine infused toothpicks to help with withdrawal. The lozenges were 2mg. When I got a craving I’d pop a lozenge. After a couple weeks as the craving interval got longer and less intense, I’d break the lozenges in half. Took about 6 weeks or so to wean off nicotine completely.
I was smoking 7-10 a day of ultra-lights when I quit. I still get cravings occasionally, but I’m able to ignore them. Sometimes I put a rubber band around my wrist and give it a snap right on where your pulse can be felt. It’s a psychological distraction method. Works. Sometimes you need more than one and sometimes a real hard snap.
The toothpicks I still use occasionally, mostly in social situations.
The lozenges taste like shit, even though they have some peppermint flavoring. The toothpicks also having flavorings added, like cinnamon, vanilla and others. You can find the toothpicks online. The lozenges are by prescription.
Anything to help.
My mom never kicked the habit, my dad went cold turkey after smoking for 60 years. Both died of smoking-related diseases. Sigh.
Forgot to add in the original post, I was one year quit this past Jan 3rd.
I’m having a nicotine fit right fucking now.
The Wifely Unit went and got me a bag of little suckers so I have something to help with the hand/mouth thing.
I haven’t had a cigarette since Monday morning. I smoked the last one in a half a pack I found out in the truck, when I went to pick up some pills, with a cup of coffee in the morning.
I ain’t liking it but I’m gonna give it my best shot. It helps remembering that I’m not spending twelve fucking dollars a day on a pack of cigarettes anymore.
Have you tried the nicotine patches? I use them for my MS related balance issues, but also for tiredness issues as well, and they do help.
I smoked for 25 years and quit cold-turkey. It was hard, but neccessary.
The patches won’t give you the oral/hand fixation (shut up Cederq), but you can turn it into another ritual.
Keep in mind, also, that cigs aren’t the same as they were 30 years ago. They contain more chemicals, additives and man-made nicotine. The patches deliver pure nicotine.
I didn’t say a word… But, since you brought it up.
Hang in there; what kept me going when I was quitting was “You can make or break any habit in three weeks.”
Well, I had a four-week Navy school in Sandy-Eggo coming up, so I decided that was gonna be the time. I headed there from Point Mugu, and I was literally counting the hours since my last one.
Pretty tough sledding, but I made it; haven’t had one since May of ’91.
Side benefit: Herself had been ragging me for at least fifteen years to quit.
I quit.
She divorced my ass two years later…
Yep, 21 days does a habit make
Phil, drink lots of water as it helps flush the nicotine (and the cravings) out of your system faster. I stopped in 2010 and the water thing really helped.
Give it hell Phil.
I can tell ya from past experience… do not forget about having a patch on and hop in a hot tub. You’ll have some serious strange dreams. Like the choke your mother kinda nightmares.
See Don’t mind me’s comment above and my reply… Choking your mother? Please lie down and we can discuss that, you been having these fantasies and delusion for awhile? Tell me about you growing up and your relationship with your mother and your dad… Is it Ro, or did you forget the “N”?
Dropped the N
I smoked 40 years.
In my opinion, it only takes 72hrs to get rid of the nicotine in your system, so the real problem is “the habit”. You put your two fingers together, and take a puff of air. Rinse and repeat as necessary, until you’ve replaced “the habit” with something else. I haven’t smoked now in 7 years.
Would probably just cough now if I actually had one.
Hang in there.
I quit dipping after 29 years. Chaw, then Cope, then Skoal, finally Grizz because prices were so damn high.
Ran out of worm-dirt on Labor Day weekend 2022, quit on that day. Cold turkey.
Science articles say it’s harder to quit smokeless tobacco than heroin, so I’m thinking of becoming a junkie and quitting that cold turkey to see what was worse, but don’t think I have the funds for 29 years of riding the dragon.
There should be vapes with no nicotine in them. That way you could take a drag of pure water/steam and blow a smoke ring and a big puff of “smoke.” Probably help.
