What is it?

Mr. Mayo nailed it: a  1550 Belgium Iron Scolds Bridle Mask. – To publicly humiliate and punish women for nagging, brawling, blasphemy and lying.

  1. Funny thing is that it looks to be made of cold rolled steel and not cast iron like medieval stuff. It’s fairly modern.

  2. I hate to say it, but in this f-ed up day and age, I would say it is what passes for ART!!!!

  3. Looks like one of the face protectors from one of the German universities like Heidelberg that allowed dueling with sabres {Mensurs}, since having duelling scars was regarded as a good thing, the mask protected eyes, nose and mouth, but left the cheeks open.

  4. Looks like a Scold’s Bridle. Back in the day, they would use them on women such as Hillary Clinton, to teach them to mind their tongues. The bell on top is a nice touch.

I think they need to bring it back… Stocks for men accused and found guilty of the same thing.
