You missed one famous Kombi: the Fabulous Furry Freak Bros’ van, as featured in almost all their adventures.
SIGH! Have owned 3 air cooled and worked on a dozen or more, pretty much every model they made. Should have kept at least one, but moved on to VW diesels, of which I have 2 remaining. Now the idiots in Wolfsberg plan to do away with all IC engines. They are idiots and I sure would like to know what they put in the water supply up there because whatever it is, appears to also be in DC and Detroit..
Anyone that has driven across the U.S. a few times (I think I am up to 12 crossings) can tell you electric ain’t gonna work and there is no magic chemistry that will provide 500 miles between fill ups and 10 minutes for same. Grrrr.
As to the Tatra, there were quite a few still on the road when I was doing business in the Czech and Slovak republics in the late 1990’s, really neat cars. Would not mind having one brought over here just for the shock value at local shows. 😉
wish they still made them. great car, fun to drive. fill up the oil and check the gas! floors would rot easily but wish i still had one . . . . .
Bought a ’63 Ford Econoline on a Friday, “3 on the tree” set up. Had to learn quick because I had to drive it to work on Monday. The old man coulda’ taught me as he had a MGC-GT but nobody was allowed to drive HIS car.
I learned on a 1948 Wlly’s Jeep
My last one was a 66 with the 1300. Unfortunately totaled it T-boning a 65 Mustang that turned left right in front of me. The boot full of tools saved my legs.
License plate: RU66ED
I learned on a 1964 John Deere 30-20.
Yup. Learned to drive in a VW microbus. And there were magical mystery tours that to this day leave me wondering how I survived. Sheer dumb luck I suppose.
4 bolts, electrical connection and fuel line and the engine is out. Far cry from today.
I believe that DOG underneath the white ’70-ish ragtop has had those four bolts out before…
Drove a 65 bus from 1975-84. Went across the the country twice in it. Learned how to rebuild the engine from the old hippy VW book. Also had a 60 beetle. Good memories, but I barely made it out alive when I wrecked the bus. Steering wheel comes right at you in an accident. Decided to give up on them after that.
first new vehicle was a 71 blue super beatle. took two cross country trips in a 70 bus. great times
Have had 4 beetles over the years, did laps at Nurburgring in a Type 3 (fastback) back in the 70s. Love the air cooled cars, still have an 82 930.
