I had a VW beetle. Not that impressed. Maybe in 1938 it was yowza.
My first vehicle was a bug. A ’55 if I remember correctly. Body was shot, at least the front anyway. Ran real good and the oil didn’t get too dirty between changes. My first road trip was 1585 miles from my duty station, Argentia NFLD, Canada to central New England. One flat tire was the only problem, other than getting blown around by big rigs blowing past me on I-95 in Maine. That was 54 years ago in January 1968.
My first car was a 58 bug. No gas gauge, just a 1 gallon reserve tank and foot operated valve you’d kick madly at when the engine started to cough and falter.
My dad bought it new in 58, my mom finally got a driver’s license and the car in 64 and I got it from mom in 68 when she got, ta-da, a new 68 beetle.
I eventually got that beetle too.
Our family suffered from beetlemania.

Hitler’s revenge
People shover
Poor man’s Porsche
Unsafe at EVERY speed
…you get the idea. NOT a fan.
my favorite car as a kid, fill up the oil & check the gas. would take “death rides” standing on the side step with arm thru the window & side window to brace & try to knock your buddy off on the grocery carts in the park lot, or doing donuts in the snow. . . back then the cops would just look at you & shake their heads as long as you weren’t doing property damage & such . . . boys being boys without the nanny state.
Had 4 different VW’s, 3 beetles and a bus. Fond memories. I rebuilt engines for all of them, got them broken. I recently worked on a 65 beetle for a friend. I was reminded how uncomfortable and under-powered they are, but I still tried to buy it from him. I still love them, in spite of their flaws.
