Think of how far a dollar went back in those days.
One of my grandfathers’ had just such a shop. One of the better legends of his is the time he was out in the boondocks and his engine threw a rod. He pulled the head off, removed the broken piston and con rod, carved a block of wood to fit the cylinder, hammered it in place, bolted the mess back up and drove home on three cylinders.
One of the wifes relatives has a Model T pick up and he taught me how to drive that planetary gearbox they use. After you get used to it it’s actually pretty cool. I took it driving around in a pasture and with those large diameter wheels and ability to exaclty control torque without riding a clutch actually makes it a fairly capable off roader. Turns out there’s a reason they sold so many of them.
