  1. It was abject failure to find a slab of frizzed oj at the bottom of the pitcher after stirring that slop for 47 hours for breakfast. I started soaking the unopened sleeve in hot water to try and melt it before mixing. Didn’t work. Basically a life lesson in frustration. I don’t ever remember having a jug of oj… it was always a frozen slug of oj. You would burn more calories stirring than what you got from drinking. Oj starvation. I don’t know if mom did it on purpose, but it was a prime lesson on 80 – 20. That last 20% took 80% of your will to live…. and it never melted….. After it plopped into your cup and spilled juice all over the table, you could sit on it to reduce the swelling from the licks you got for making a mess.

    • Indeed. Now, can we talk about mom using the wooden spoon (or a spatula) as an implement of administering discipline? My mom never used a shoe, it was always a large kitchen utensil. We had large spoons (one solid, one slotted) in metal as well. They got a lot of use stirring Kool Aid, since they wouldn’t stain like a wooden spoon would.

  2. As a kid, I’d take some Tang, vanilla ice cream and some milk and whip it up in a blender. Something like an Orange Julis type drink.

    • Tang. Man, I haven’t thought about that in a long time. I guess they still make it.

  3. Once the lid was off, use an ice pick to poke an air hole in the other end. If you bend the ice pick over to 20 to 25 degrees and then pull it out the can will whistle as the orange tube slides out.

  4. Never used a spoon just squeezed the shit out because that’s what it looked like coming out

  5. How come nobody ever put it in the sink the night before? Sheesh. I thought some of you were better thinkers!

    • I always take frozen concentrate (OJ, lemonade, etc.) out of the freezer and put it in the fridge the day before I plan to use it. Nice and easy.

  6. We didn’t drink it in pitchers. We took a metal spoon and scooped it into a glass. Poured water from the faucet, stirred with a spoon of sugar and a old glass of OJ was produced.

  7. A third or half of a can of OJ (frozen, just scoop it out of the can), 1/4 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, add crushed ice to the top and BLEND. Adjust milk and sugar to taste. You can also use REAL vanilla ice cream (we use Tilamook) instead of milk.

Wonderful Orange Smoothie. FanTAStic on a hot summer day.

This ^ is why I am so fat.

  8. Mom and one of my grandmothers used to fresh squeeze oranges using a glass orange juicer. Seeds and all would go into your glass straight from the juicer.

Mom was really happy when frozen concentrate became widely available and affordable in the 50’s.

  9. You just need to know the secret ..You have to stare at it….

It says right on the can…”CONCENTRATE”

    I’ll let myself out… lol
