This looks ugly.
Very ugly.
I just watched another forecast video and that guy was predicting wind chill temperatures of MINUS 50 degrees across almost all of the Central Plains, Upper Midwest and even clear into Kentucky having negative temps in the 20’s.
Upper Texas is likely to get blasted again too.
Be smart, get ready for this.
Believe it or not, some sources are claiming there’s a chance of at least light snow Christmas Eve/Day here in the NW Florida Panhandle.
I’ll believe it when I see it, but it IS suppose to get down to 19 degrees one night this week.
May have to wear a tube sock on Mini-Me to prevent frostbite.
I thought a finger cot was what you said last year…
It was particularly cold last year…
In 1989, it went from 79 and rainy to 19 and snowing in 8 hours in North Central Florida. So snow is possible. We’re looking at a high of 38 degrees in Alachua County on Christmas Eve. Add a little moisture and we’ve got snow and ice just in time for Jolly Old St. Nick.
Damn. Maybe have to not wear sandals that day. Gotta go find my socks…
Went from -45 to +50 in 6 hours in 1974 in Minot, lotsa windshields cracking and busting out! That was the worst day I had there. My ’57s leaked like sieves, so nothing happened.
My worst dispatch, it went to -72, and that WASN’T with the wind chill.
Gotta love NorthDakotaLand!
Woke up to 6F in middle of nowhere Idaho this morning. Wind chill made it feel like -7F according to the local weather station. Usually don’t see this type of cold until January.
Snow forecast Wednesday and Friday this week. Should already add to the white stuff we have on the ground from last Monday’s 6″ of snow.
Weather guessers have (North central PA) single digit lows this weekend with strong winds, -10 to – 15 with the wind chill voodoo, I am betting I will be getting called out. Weird shit starts when it gets close to zero. I am hoping for a call out when we are at the outlaws – they are crazy people
Better snowerize yer evs hehehe!
Already done. Antifreeze (for plumbing) in all the sink traps and toilet, water system drained, heaters in the front and back to maintain a 40 degree temp to keep the moisture out. I periodically check for rodents, etc.
“evs,” Igor is Electric Vehicles… I am spit balling here but maybe you need winterizing. A little slow on the uptake. Must have a clogged venturi.
He’s using the same substance as Nancy.
It is a mixture of Vodka & Gin.
My bad, I read it as rv’s…
Low processor voltage.
well, it is snowing here again. on top of the freezing rain crap we got a couple of days ago. so the view outside is looking more like frosted instead of glazed these
days now. lost count of the fuel trucks going past out front too.
but it has bein cold here for the last week or so anyway. I love living in the woods
but if I had to buy heating oil like a lot of people around here do, then no.
most people get heating oil dropped off like 2-3 times a winter here. but at 6 bucks a gallon, that has to hurt now a days. even my neighbors are saying I was smart to install the wood stoves now. and I did that back when heating oil was under 3 bucks per gallon. I remember spending a bit over a grand to fill up both tanks back then. then too, they started up a food bank around here too, another first for the asshole in dc. seems like a lot of people are having to buy fuel instead of food this winter. not good.
I am told that propane is up in price too, although I don’t know how much.
refilling a 20 pound tank is up to 25 bucks now instead of just under 20 not too long ago. well, I need to refill the wood rack as it getting low and check the stove
downstairs. the one thing I love about heating with wood is the house stays warm long after the stove goes out.
you can not say that about hot air heat.
Here in western Wyoming, we saw the picket pins (ground squirrels) go below ground for the winter very very early. Gonna be a very very cold and long winter.
Interior Alaska reporting in.
5 ft. of snow already on the ground. Average is 3.5 – 4 ft. annually.
Currently -36F.
I’ve already spent close to $100.00 in diesel fuel for the tractor keeping the driveway opened up. Last year the day after Christmas it started snowing and never quit. We got over 12 ft. by the time spring decided to show up.
As John McClane said ” Welcome to the party pal”.
Do we have to set up a Pay Pal or Go Fund Me page for your diesel?
7:30 am in Palmer, Ak. It’s a balmy -19. At least it stopped snowing for a couple of days. Only 55inches so far. Never have seen two winters the same. This one shaping up to be a record setter. 1st ANGLICO
Well howdy neighbor
Back at you Deathray. Stay warm and watch out for the newbie greenhorns on the highway, they love exploring the ditches. Balmy -19 at 10:45 am but no new snow.
Enjoy your site Phil. Me and the Wifey Unit are in South Central Ohio, where, so far, not much snow is predicted, but the cold is., along with major wind. At this point We are kind of on the border of major/minor fuckery. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Scott and Christine
Here in the Oregon Outback, we haven’t been above freezing in a couple weeks. Yesterday’s high was 21F and the lows the past couple nights have been minus 13F! I’ve seen in down around zero here before, but not this long, and certainly not this early in the cold season. Keeping the woodstove going 24/7 now. Keeping my fingers crossed about the plumbing; so far water and sewer continue to function. The forecast high for Wednesday is now 36F. Whoopie.
Here in Roseburg it hasn’t got below 31F and about 40-45F during the day.
Looks like I moved out of South Dakota in time! I still use a Credit Union back there and their web page has warnings about closures at all the branches for for the last few days. Called a friend back there and he said they are getting hammered!
Be prepared yes, it’s winter. However can we stop with the constant bullshit sensational weather forecasts? It’s become tiresome.
People start getting cold because of dwindling stocks of fuel oil and propane/natural gas and deaths occur, would it finally wake the normies up as to our immediate future under the leftest bidenites?
I may have to break into the pinto bean stash and convert to…natural gas.
Just gimme a lighter and I’ll bend over…
Unreliable. Ya gotta poop sometime!!
Biden ecomony Heater Roulette.
No. Nothing will wake the brain-dead ‘we were just following orders’ normies who will not notice anything that the eneMedia and our rulers tell them not to notice.
Shit. There are still people wearing masks and panicking when seeing the unmasked out there. Lots of them.
The normies haven’t noticed anything about the slide from a Constitutional Republic into this neo-feudalism that we are starting to live in. These are the same brain-dead idiots who believe the rise in gun crimes is because there are more guns out there, nothing to do with leftist prosecutors and judges unwilling to prosecute criminals.
jeff in Maine
awful handy having woodstove and genny, went 24hrs w/ nopower , woke up 24″ of sticky snow. Damn hard to move with a 1953 2wd tractor.
You wouldn’t be the Jeff that built his house on a giant erratic would you? If you are, I’m your hunting season neighbor up the hill @Twins.
Well, I found out Saturday my Jeep dropped a valve seat – it seems the Chrysler 4.7 loses valve seats after 100K miles, so I was doing good at 280K miles. Found a place in Texas that will do BOTH heads for $400 and $60 for shipping both ways (don’t forget the core return!) – I’ll check local guys that do head work (I have few favorites) and see if they can beat that. Apparently most machine shops can do the seats but don’t really “fix” the valve seats dropping.
Anyway, the point of this rambling is to say that now I have to do a half-teardown in an unheated garage. It’s out of the weather, though – and I have a two-burner propane tank heater that can crank out 45K BTUs at max. But the tanks are empty, so time to slog across the Idaho line to State Line and get ’em filled up. Shouldn’t be more’n 30 bucks, right? RIGHT?!?
I want a one or two car shop with a wood or pellet stove AND a lift, Santa… Can do??
a guy down the road has a 3 car garage/shop with the lift in the middle bay. very handy ! he also has a heated floor in it too .
outside wood boiler run it and his house. but he got money I don’t have. if I did, I would like the same setup.
Yep. I am just about a skosh to the west of dead center in that purple area on the first image.
Stocking up and prepping the generator.
Oops, the second image with the video link purple zone applies.
My barn gets too cold when it is below freezing outside. The heater will bring it up maybe 5 to 10 from whatever the outdoors is, so freezing outside is my limit. At least the little office annexed to it was insulated like crazy and a little radiant oil filled heater keeps it above 65 regardless.
Assume Phil has real heat in that garage, or at least I hope he does.
I’d sooner spontaneously combust than freeze to death, thank you very much. 😁 YMMV
Easier to survive after a hurricane with no power and no air handling system than it is to survive a blizzard with no power and no air handling system.
I’d rather see you spontaneously disrobe myself…
Just go sit in the corner and face the wall.
You may not join the rest of us until you learn how to act appropriately and are prepared to apologize to everyone.
When pigs perform differential calculus…
Expecting several days and nights of sub-zero weather later in the week here in Northern Colorado. Monday will be OK outside, so I’ll cut and split some more wood, and rack it in the garage.
Phil, I have it on good authority that map is showing change in temp not low temps. Not sure if it denotes change from current or normal temps though. Either way it means negative 20’s for me if it comes to fruition. It’s supposed to be 34F on Christmas so not a long term event here.
This winter has been quite different. It’s been below freezing for six weeks now. Our first snowfall is still here. Never seen that in 29 years. Normally it snows, warms up, melts…..repeat all winter. I’ve had 28″ of snow so far this year and it’s compacted down to 16″ or so. A bit of it may have sublimated though. I’m in eastern, WA. This year reminds me of Montana winters in the 70’s.
MAGA, you and I are neighbors. Lived here most of my life, starting in ’57. This weather is nothing new, had to deliver the Spokesman-Review in -15 degrees in ’65 (if I recall correctly, which would be a miracle).
WE just have more whiners now. Nuttin’ new.
I noticed we were neighbors a time or two. I think there is another regular here from the same area. I’m a transplant to the area. Military brat and later, military spouse. Arrived here in 1992/93. Most winters here have just been sloppy wet messes but every five or six years we get a good one. We’ve had several winters with minus 20 for 2-3 weeks straight. I used to work outside then. I’ve just not seen it get cold in the fall and stay cold like it has this year. I don’t mind it one bit myself compared to the sloppy wet mess we usually get.
OMG, everyone panic, it’s gonna be cold, maybe with snow.
It’s winter. Cold happens and when it’s cold, sometimes it snows, A LOT. Deal with it.
Back in 76-77 and 77-78 winters the Ohio river froze over, something that hadn’t happened since early 1900’s.
In central New England, in January 78, the temp never got above 32F for the whole month and for one week of that it never got above 0F.
How’s glowbull warming doing?
Yep, single digits sub zero windchills with high winds Thursday and Friday cold as hell on each end of that.
In middle TN, worried about cows calving in extreme low temps. I have rescued several calves in past years by soaking in a bathtub with 100’ water. Often you will have frostbitten ears and tails when calves are born in temps below 10’.
Handy site to have + there’s an app of course…
https://www.ventusky.com/
Seconded. GREAT site!
Ha, I use it too
Like my dad used to say, “it’s cold enough to pull up another wife!”
Very chilly here in Cape Coral Florida this morning. In the 50’s had to put a sweat shirt on, and now at 5:15 its only 73, I guess that’s the high for the day.
If this keeps up I’ll have to go further south. Just ain’t right.
Lower Texas too we supposed to get to 20 degrees and windy in Houston area got to take precautions for my palm trees and tropical plants
Make sure the antifreeze is good to zero in that old Chevy ya got too.
Remember what happened to the old Dodge truck…
