Skunked Again

I paid for me and my brother to go on a chartered salmon fishing trip on the Columbia river today.

Two other guys joined up to fill up the boat and both of those guys wound up catching a nice Coho salmon. I had one on but lost it before it got to the boat and the same thing happened to my brother. The weather was surprisingly nice and the rain held off until we were literally getting in our rigs to come home.

I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night. I got home and went to bed early but had trouble getting to sleep. 5 A.M. came real early. When I got home from sitting in that boat for 7 hours, I came in, sat down in my recliner and was out for 3 hours.

. The only reason I woke up then was because the wife had dinner ready.

  1. Come to Wisconsin or Michigan and fish Lake Michigan. We have salmon to spare–kings and cohos, along with lots of steelhead.

  2. You both have that squinty eyes about you. Yup, you look like brothers. Ya know, time spent fishing is not deducted from the time you are allotted here on Earth, so sayeth God.

  3. Honest question. I haven’t fished for salmon ever. Do you need that arctic looking clothes to do it? Y’all look like ice fishers.

    • It’s down in the 30’s around here now in the mornings.. When you are in an open boat in the middle of a mile wide river hauling ass you damn well want warm clothes and something to break the wind.
Plus the forecast called for rain.

    • Just wait until you get about 80 miles off the coast of Oregon or Washington fishing for salmon, halibut or cod in the fall and if you don’t have that artic looking clothes, jackets, rain slicker on you will freeze out there. It does get cold out on the Columbia River when the airflow coming down the gorge. Plus, I don’t know Phil’s brother but Phil is a skinny assed dude, no fat or reserves on ’em…

  4. Well, ya know what they say.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.

I’ve only caught one salmon in my life. A 39 inch, 27 pound King out of Lake Ontario. That it happened two days after spraining my wrist in a race car wreck made it difficult, to say the least. Took well over 20 minutes to reel it in.
That was a good day on the water.

Glad to see you are still making time to enjoy yourself.

  5. Ya should’a tossed some Ant-eef-a members over the side. Would’a made the trip worthwhile.

  6. Recently lost my fishing buddy who owned the boat. Usta love joining hog line off Chinook Landing. Nicest folks in the world, the kinda folks who made ya laugh 3 boats away. When one of them discovered the salmon were biting, the word got out. Most the time no one cared if the fish were there. It was a great place just to get away.

    • I’m helping my step-son rewire and upgrade a 22 ft. Hydra Sport he got for one hell of a steal.
It’s gonna be a LOT of work, but we’re making progress as he orders in new parts for improvements. Should make the summers a bit more fun when we get it done.

  7. I would make fun of you all bundled up like that, but down here in Florida, we’re about to get the first shock to the system when it gets down in the 40s by morning. Not really built for this shit, but at least I’ll be able to open the back door in the garage when I work out in the morning to keep from sweating my nuts off.
I still bet we don’t get 8 inches of snow like we got earlier this year.
    Fuckin’ freak show.

      • From a lot of the “future cast” senarios I’ve seen, the arctic air blasts are gonna play hell for the forseeable future.

  8. I’m glad you had some fun with your brother. Mine hates me. When we were kids, I used,to get up in the middle of the night and piss under the edge of his bed. There were witches in the bathroom so fuck that. Our mom would get up in the AM and whop his ass. I never said shit. I been an asshole all my life. Putting a fine edge on it, now.

  9. Like they say, better to be fishing and thinking about God than sitting in church and thinking about fishing. Or something like that.

  10. ps Phil, I been fishing many a day as well, didn’t say catching, just fishing. Still a hell of a lot better than work. Honestly, I can fish all day and go home happy.
