Road Trip

I’m heading out of town to the High Desert of Central Oregon to meet up with a bunch of family for the weekend.

If I remember right, it’s the first time since last Summer that I went anywhere just to go fuck off and that one turned into a bust. I’m not taking this infernal laptop so you are going to be lef tto the tender mercies of my esteemed friend CederQ and his special sense of twisted humor.

In a first for me, I am not driving and will be copiloting for my youngest daughter while she drives, wait for it, a fucking Tesla.

It’s about a 4 hour drive so I am packing an extra extension cord just in case.

I hope you all have an awesome weekend and for God’s sake keep all your damn fingers will ya?

Leave the stupidity to the plethora of idiots we have running around.

Hopefully I’ll be back Sunday, fatter and somewhat rested. I had a bad cold from last Friday until yesterday so I’m glad the congestion in my head is cleared up because it is indeed the High Desert and the altitude is going to take a toll on my broke down old ass anyway.

Like I tell my children, if you can’t be good, stay sanitary.

Thanks,

Phil

  1. Enjoy the time with family, have an safe trip and we’ll se ya on the flipside!

  2. Too late to be of much help now Phil, but there are a lot of places here in the Oregon Outback that we call “radio free Oregon”: no cell reception at all. Stick to well traveled highways; many of the “roads” out here might see two or three cars a day, if that. Yeah, this is deep “flyover country” and we like it that way.

  3. I camped near the Steens Mtns, due south of Burns in August ’23. You can drive up to 9,900 ft and walk to 10,000 ft. Awesome territory. French Glen is a hoot!

    • I used to go to Malheur Wildlife Refuge a couple times a year(1980 to 1995) for two weeks actually camping on the refuge doing bird censuses for the Fish and Wildlife Service. I would be provided firewood, water and a truck every three days to empty my and others black/grey tanks and would drop off surplus peanut butter, cheese and other staples. I crawled around Steens Mtn. and Alvord Desert east of it and hunted out in that area often. Did you stop at the round barn out East/North of French Glen?

      • Yep on the round barn. It’s well maintained. Also checked out the visitor’s center at the Wildlife Refuge. They have awesome bird displays and panoramas..
We camped up high for a week on one of the lakes, then another couple weeks down at the narrows. Circled the range across the Alford playa, soaked at the hot springs too. Antelope season opened while we were there with most of the guys camped near us were successful.

Last month we were at the Wild Horse reservoir south of the Duck Lake Reservation. Attempted Jarbidge but got snowed out above 8,500 ft. The 11-point turn around on that hillside curve was dicey for my Xcab F150!

  4. It’s discovery time: you’ll discover why you stay away from so many people whenever possible . . . Enjoy!

  5. Have fun, and don’t forget to write!! We’ll send ticket money if necessary.

Not too many charging stations out t hat way… got a portable generator?
