Old Truck Tuesday

Sent in by reader M. His sweet ride!
That’s a ’70 K10, short bed, 350 4bbl w/ air & 3 speed on the column.
The 350 is rebuilt on the bottom with a Melling MTC-1 cam, Bored 0.040 over, crank ground 0.010, everything new.
Got rid of the Rochester in favor of an Edelbrock 1406.
The factory heads were trash so I found a set of ’66, 76cc chamber, double hump heads, that I’m about to add long slot, steel, roller rockers to. Can’t wait!
It is good looking, I’ll give her that. But she’s still 53 years old, all drum brakes, solid axles and leaf springs so you better have her pointed where you want her before you turn her loose. I call her Ruby.

  1. CederQ, let reader M know that you can properly tune a Rochester 4MV Quadrajet to really perform if you know what to tweak… I used to race ’em on the 1/4 mile in the F/MP bracket at the Deer Park raceway back in ’68-’69 !

  2. The Dodge Tow Truck looks Great! Not many Truck Restorers go after Towing Rigs, which is a shame because Cars and Trucks have been breaking down, getting stuck, and having to be Towed since… Forever. Probably a lot has to do with the fact that Tow Trucks were just a small minority of Trucks in General, and also a lot of early ones were “Homemade” things to begin with.

Many Years ago, there was a Junkyard near Fredericksburg, VA, that went on for a Mile into the Woods, and scattered throughout were quite many Tow Trucks/Wreckers from pre-WWII on up to about the ’70s. Many were eminently Restorable, but one Time that I asked the Crabby old Man who owned the place about one, he became quite Hostile about Not wanting to Sell Any of them…

  3. “you better have her pointed where you want her when you turn her loose”

I admit to L.O.L. at that. Good one.

  4. I miss the old trucks. The ones you could work on in your driveway. Truck running rough, no problem, needs plugs. Still running rough, maybe it needs points.
I owned a 2016 Chevy Silverado v-8. I couldn’t even see the plugs. Traded it when I got a larger travel trailer for a GMC Denali diesel. Took it to the dealer today for yearly inspection. Lifetime free inspections. Oh, We’ll only charge you $59 for the emissions check. I ask, what emissions check do you perform on a diesel truck. He had to get back to me. Turns out there are no emissions checks for a diesel truck. I ask them to grease the10 minute front end. He says there are no grease fittings. I tell them there sure are, there are nine of them. Dealership wants $159 for an oil change, but that doesn’t include a lube. It’s $150 to change the fuel filter. It’s a 10 minute job. the filter is $12. The transmission has a transmission fluid filter. that’s almost $50. The problem is that there isn’t a transmission dip stick. Adding transmission fluid requires you to visit the dealer.
    I miss the old trucks.

    • Find out how the dealer determines the correct level in the transmission fluid…

The above is why I do my own work, even at age 70…
