I’ve often wondered what the two bulbous protrusions on the top of the locomotive were for. So today I looked it up. One of them is for sand used to provide traction to the drive wheels. The other is a super heated steam collector, according to wiki.
Best memory of the second grade was the springtime field trip to The Railroad Museum out on 44th Ave (Colo Hwy 58) juuuust east of Golden and the big Coors brewery. What a treasure. And then there was the “Big Boy” steam locomotive on display in the public park up in Cheyenne, Wyo. My grandma lived on Simms, south of Colfax in Lakewood, and there was an old steam locomotive making local runs on the freight spur that serviced businesses on Simms and Colfax even into the late 60’s. Moved to Katy, Tx in ’96 and used to eat at Jill’s Diner in an old Katy Railroad caboose. Love old trains.
Would love to go back and spend a week on each one

You got a quarter in your pocket? Hand it over for the privileges’.
Heck no, I don’t have a quarter in my pocket…just a couple of U nails, some hay dust and the pull twine off of a feed bag.
Well, the U-nails and the pull twine is as least a quarters worth, fair trade.
Deal. 🙂
