In railroad parlance, an engine and caboose coupled together is known as a “ caboose hop”. A freight crew would run cab hop from one terminal to an out post terminal to grab a freight train from the yard there , tack the buggy on to the rear and the horse to the head end and then depart to an objective terminal.
