Funny thing is there are at least 2 sidings, one east of Grand Rapids and one on the outskirts of Carlton that have had container cars idled.
The one by GR has around 125 cars and has been in the same place since the leaves came out in May, and was a few miles east next to a passing zone starting in early March.
The one at the BNSF yard in Carlton had well over 200 cars, I only went by that one a few times this summer.
Never saw those type of cars idled, usually grain cars in winter, ore cars in summer, lumber cars when the price is low, and oil tankers when the price is low as well.
Guess the price of dry container goods has been too damn low, and prices needed to go up quickly…
That D&H Coal “Pneumatic” Locomotive is quite a Unique Engineering Solution to operating in Underground/Explosive Atmosphere conditions. The Short Distances in Mining probably let it make a couple of Runs into the Mine, then not very long at the Compressor Station to Refill the Tank. Wonder what the Operating Pressure was? It looks like heavier construction than a Steam Boiler – maybe 5-600 PSI?
Very unique set today. Hard times in those days
