The first pic is of a Shay geared logging engine. Notice the off-set boiler….
#3 is O. V. Bulleid’s “Leader”. It was a steam engine with a cab for the driver at each end. Unfortunately Bulleid, in his wisdom, designed the fireman’s position almost fully enclosed in the centre so they got heatstroke..
I just love seeing this old train stuff! I’d forgotten how important the railroads were to building our country until we moved here.
Question about sidings in places like Wyoming: they would have 10- 12 propane tanks aligned down the way. Is that for starting/heating cold engines? Or some other purpose?
