That sure looks like a big differential…but I didn’t think trains needed one!…maybe its just a housing for the pinion and ring gears, which it would def need…!
Small industrial switch engine,probably diesel hydraulic drive.
Did you noticed a differential under the front drive wheels? Diesel Electric would be my guess.

The Indians aren’t blessing the streamliner. They have used that piece of Buffalo Femur to derail it. Hence the list to Starboard.
