NYC local 638 might learn something with this rig.
That bad, huh?
I watched a pipefitter at a Conoco refinery stick weld a 14″ pipe in the shop, he did it in one continuous bead. He changed rods so fast you couldn’t tell where he paused once everything cooled. MAN, he was good!
Ever seen the tig guys do mirror welding? Thats some skill. They place mirrors so they can see the back side of tubes to weld them in a boiler. Moving both hands in concert, yelling out voltage settings to his helper all while watching the weld in a mirror showing a teversed image.
Sure enough have.
The current reiteration of myself is Foreman/Quality Control/Inspection at power plants. I’ve got my tube certs, but I leave that to the younger ones.

It is an art. I suck at it but was never really trained or practice. Tulsa’s local was the ramrod’s on the Alaska pipeline. Stories I’ve read and documentaries I have seen tell a great story. Especially on a long down slope to be finished.
