Better yet; show them the analog DWELL/TACH we used when replacing the points! Or just show them the matchbook cover you used to set the point gap to get it “close enough” because you couldn’t afford a dwell/tach… or feeler gauges…
Oh; and don’t forget to show them your TIMING LIGHT! …Or just show them the ear you used to set the timing because you couldn’t afford a timing light… “Adjust the timing so that the engine pings on acceleration, and then back off the timing just enough so that it doesn’t ping…”
Poverty was a GREAT teacher…
Tom, I still have hte dwell/tach, still have the bargain-basement tach light, and I learned a long time ago that the average dollar bill is about .005 so you can fold a dollar for four layers and get close enough to .019 to keep it running.
And, yes, since I raced so much I *DID* tune by ear. But that was before Fool Injectin engines. Chebbie OR Ford.
Learned a LOT playing with cars back in the 60’s and 70’s… and poverty is indeed a fantastic motivator and teacher if you are so motivated and clever.
Or I could show them my carb-tuning setup I use on my four-cylinder bikes.
Y’all missed the ‘setting a glass of water on the engine and watching the vibration of the water’ method.
It’s a fricking Mercedes Benz, of course that is how it was done.
