I always wondered how they cut carbide into the various industrial shapes. I used to have to buy these small pieces for our manufacturing process. Never knew Grampa’s old knife sharpener was carbide till then. Still have it and his strop.
I’ve seen some DIY EDM machines. It’s a bit early for them to be making much headway with hobbyists, but there’s a few. There are the guys who use home made EDM to rifle gun barrels. 3D Print a plastic fixture with the right spiral grooves, put wires in the grooves, then put the plastic with wires in a barrel in saltwater and run voltage. Rifled barrels at home. Not as precise as the little piece they show, but better than you could do without it.
After the collapse, all this will have to be invented again.
