Gas milage and price. Road noise. Comfort. I bet the higher priced ones ride better. I’m fairly sure the Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, heck, all of them, have higher top speed and better 0 to 60 than my 3-cylinder Mirage. Yeah, they all look similar.
Every one of them costs 10 times what they are worth.
This lets you blend in when you are leaving the scene.
I can’t tell em apart anymore unless I see the brand badge. Exception for vomit green Kia Soul’s. I can spot those a mile away.
Toyota is the only one I’d buy off this list. Rest of em aren’t worth a shit. German made are crap anymore. Way over complicated. Many BMW engines have rod bearings as an unofficial maintenance item around 80k miles.
The Toyota quality/reliability of today is not what you remember from years past. My wife’s Camry needed a head job (the valves leaked oil into the piston chamber, lots of white smoke during a cold start) not once, but twice in under 100k miles. I blame the second time on the dealership shop, but the first time should never have happened. Some other issues too, but that was the one that got me to finally replace it.
What country was it manufactured in?
IDK – probably US manufactured.
Clearly the skills necessary to be a modern auto designer are similar to the skills of mimicry, imitation, parroting and group think common to modern “journalists”.
Put a lump of clay into a wind tunnel and shape for minimum drag, and you’re going to end up with the same shape, no matter where in the world yo udo it.
“Snuffy” hit the nail on the head. The difference is “under the hood.”
Add to that 10,000 “Safety Regulations” that dictate the design features of every part of a Car. Then throw in “Design for Efficient Assembly”, where Engineers figure out the Easiest Way to Fit every component in the Car in a Sequence that gives Minimum Assembly Time and Labor (particularly Human Labor) and that’s how you get an Engine Compartment that requires the Removal of the Engine to change a Spark Plug….
And as a Jet Mechanic with 40+ Years of Experience, I can say that while there are many “Accessibility Issues” with changing Parts in Aircraft, you Seldom encounter a situation where you must Remove several unrelated Parts to get to the one you have to Change. From what I’ve seen in Cars, you can’t Give me any one of the Vehicles on this List – I’ll keep my 30-Year-Old Diesel Pickups running Forever.
Get a pre-1970 pick em up truck.
0-60 in under 20 seconds!
if I ever hit the lottery, I going to get a pre 1972 chevy pickup truck.
nice and simple engine and drivetrain. hell, I want the roll up windows too.
but just about anything made before 1973 was good. that is when the EPA got started fucking up cars and trucks bigtime.
Love my ’70 K10 but it’s still a 52 year old pickup with drum brakes, leaf springs and straight axles. So, it doesn’t really like stopping, cornering or going over bumps and if you find yourself needing to do all 3 at once you better hang on ’cause you’re probably headed for the ditch or the cardiac ward or both. Plus, it gets approximately 12 mpg on the highway if you can keep the secondaries from opening.
Other than that, you couldn’t kick the grin off my face when I’m out tooling around telling every third person that sees it that it’s not for sale.
Yup, my experience too. Having owned a 1967 Dodge big block for many years, it was totally cool to cruise and totally embarrassing when any late model family sedan with a 6-banger and a soccer mom could outrun me, out turn me, and out stop me. I’d like to get another old vehicle, but it would definitely need disc brakes and some upgrades to suspension.
Form follows function.
I’ll never forget the day about ten years ago when I was driving across the I-205 bridge into Portland and I was following 3 almost identical white cars.
I literally couldn’t tell the difference between them except for the tail lights. I sped up to see what was going on and they were 3 totally different brands of cars. 1 BMW, 1 Ford and 1 Toyota.
Back in my misspent youth, I could tell the difference between a Ford, Chevy and Dodge from a half mile away, from any angle.
I could even tell you which one was driving by with my eyes closed because I could hear the difference in the exhaust notes.
These days you can be standing right next to the fucker and can’t tell if it’s even running and that’s not even the ones that are fucking electric!
As for what they cost anymore, you could go find something pre 73 if it ain’t rusted out and have a freaking SHOW CAR by the time you spent the same amount.
Usually been this way. I still have trouble with cars of the 30s. Late 50s was a great time though. However I’ve owned 3 beetles so there’s that.
“GTU” Generic Transport Unit.
Up until 2000 , my wife and I both refused to own anything later than a 72. We’d rather have any brand built before then !
Then she decided that she wanted a new car….which was of course a request I grudgingly agreed to. Provided it was a Toyota mini truck. She wanted a Datsun…told her they didn’t exist anymore. That’s what a Nissan became, and they are shit compared to Toyoyo.
Well we bought a new Tacoma for her , this was before they got big. With the 2.4 four cylinder.
She loves that lil thing and still is driving it today.
I found a 92 , Hilux for myself . It was a garage queen with less than a hundred k on it !
Everybody and their mother has tried to buy that lil truck from me.
Not for sale !
I have a 1994 4runner in the shop right now, trying to bring it back to life. also have 2016 4runner with all the bells and crap.
compared to the 2016, it is rather basic. V6, auto tranny, A/C and
radio. and power windows too. ever since I blew out my back, I can’t work on anything over 20 minutes or it screams at me.
it went into the shop for a intake gasket 6-7 years ago and the clown fucked it up big time too. the owner of the shop refused to charge me for it. I know him a long time. so, it sat until this past year. found a good shop up here, country boys style.
they got it up and running after sitting for years, but now I have to replace the exhaust system, as mice have made a home it it.
between swapping some tools I no longer can use and cash
looks like I will get it back for a little more than 1500 bucks !
the main problem now is the older hoses are breaking and leaking
so, running them down and fixing them is taking some time.
might get it back my Christmas !

Like Carlin said, “The illusion of choice.”
They forgot the Subaru Forester.
Leaving the scene, hey?
